I like to wander in natural places and concentrate on what I can do simply to connect the “real” world to the imaginative, questioning and philosophical world, mostly but not necessarily always in landscape.
Initial visual and sensual perceptions usually take the form of gestural sketching in a range of media like ink, watercolour, pencil and charcoal. The pieces in this collection of small semi abstract works use brush drawing, paint and layers of thin glazing washes to create colour depth to induce a sense of mystery.
Sometimes it’s better not to act too fast and to let things sit while more fundamental elements of the observed subject work their way to where they can be advanced further with paint....at other times the opposite is true and you go for it on the spot.
The observed natural and human elements possess their own energy and during translation or codification into two dimensions, responding to those energies can provide gateways leading towards new awareness. The reward is to be able to share the process and results with others as art.

Commencing to process visual and sensual perceptions my initial responses usually take the form of gestural sketching in a range of media, ink and watercolour marks or masses.
Memory plays a role as well. Sometimes it’s better not to act too fast and to let things sit while a “truer” or more fundamental form of the observed subject works its way to where it can be advanced with paint. At other times the opposite is true.
The natural and human elements along with their shared thresholds possess energy, both “out there” and during translation or codification into two dimensions when the painting starts. Manipulating those energies to produce focused and integrated single images can transform seemingly impassable situations into gateways leading towards new awareness. The reward is to be able to share the process and results with others as art.
